Cleveland Yacht Club

ASQ 2025 Club of the Year Award

On the 12 Sep 2025, Cleveland Yacht Club took out Australian Sailing Queensland's top prize of Club of the Year (Cat B)
This is what Australian Sailing Queensland had to say about the club and why we won this prestigious prize:

"Cleveland Yacht Club has experienced remarkable growth and success in 2024-24, increasing membership by 32% and achieving record participation through inclusive, family-friendly initiatives.  The club has revitalized its training programs, welcomed paddlers and kite surfers, and launched new pathways in keelboat and junior sailing.  Events such as the reimagined Peel Island Marathon drew record participation and elevated the club's profile.  Volunteer numbers grew 175%, thanks to structured onboarding, mentoring, and recognition.  Governance improvements include strategic planning, digital transformation, and updated risk management.  CYC has led sustainability efforts through Containers for Change, solar reinvestment, and bay clean-up events.  The club had also promoted diversity by supporting members with disabilities and expanding inclusive programs.  With strong partnerships, and a 20-year strategic vision aligned with Olympic legacy goals, Cleveland Yacht Club is setting a new standard for community-driven, future-focused sailing in Queensland"

In his acceptance speech at the award ceremony, club Commodore, Steve Lawie, thanked all members, sailors, paddlers, and particularly the wonderful volunteers at our club.  He also emphasised our club’s core values of “being family friendly” and “helping each other” as keys to the club’s success.
