Cleveland Yacht Club

About

"[The Cleveland Yacht Club] is a club that has always strived to remain easily accessible to all those interested in sailing, regardless of wealth or social standing, thus remaining a true community sporting asset."
Brian Russell. Commodore - 2004

This is backed up by the unwavering friendliness, family appeal and helpfulness exuded by the club members themselves.

We have a social program, with BBQs after some of the races, a Christmas party, and our Presentation Dinner at the end of each season.

The Club operates on a voluntary basis with committees - comprising a Management, a Sailing and a Social Committee.

Each member has their turn as officer of the day, or as Assistant. Working Bees are also a small part of our yearly calendar, each member offering his/her expertise. A canteen in the Club House is staffed by some of our non-sailors each weekend.

Races are held every Sunday, from September to May. Since 2005 we have run a Winter series of racing, conducted every second week over the off season months. The Club Championship is run over 10 races and other Series are held throughout the season.

Additionally our paddler members enjoy club facilities and paddling (primarily surf skis) on Saturdays.

The club calendar has a lot of variety so members enjoy time on the water including opportunities of trying different kinds of boats.

Our major event; the PEEL ISLAND MARATHON, is held in April and attracts sailors from all over SE Queensland and Northern NSW.

Our mixed fleets have many classes of boats participating - dinghies (Sabre, Pacer, 125, Laser, Corsair, MG) and Catamarans/Multihulls (Nacra, Hobie, Windrush, Calypso, Weta) and encourage other classes. The Club also has an active Yacht Group and introcution to sailing training program using our Pacer and Flying 11 dinghies.

Handicapping enables all sailors an opportunity to realise place finishes in all races. Handicaps are based on both class and personal ability with the personal handicap based on the results of the first three races completed, and adjusted according to the competitor's performance there after.
