2019 Action Shopfitters 50th Peel Island Marathon

The 2019 Action Shopfitters Peel Island Marathon will be held on 28/04/2019 (Layover date 5/5/2019). This will also be the 50 years since the first race in 1969.

Due to a couple of years with inclement weather, this year we have proposed a lay over day the following weekend - this ensures the success of our premium event.

Notice of Race, Entry forms and Sailing Instructions can soon be downloaded from the links on this page.

It is lining up to be an exciting event, and should be a great day on the water, and equally exciting for spectators.

This is an open regatta, we welcome boats from other clubs. The clubgrounds will be available for out of town travellers, camping on Saturday night, so larger boats (eg F18's) can rig up the day before. There will be many helpers both Saturday and Sunday, to assist with rigging/unrigging boats as required.

Thankyou once again to all our sponsors, please click on the links oon the RH side, to visit their pages.

The beautiful Moreton Bay will once again be graced by the presence of an army of Yachts in the Cleveland Yacht Club’s premier event, the 2019 Action Shopfitters Peel Island Marathon.

The largest event on the yacht club’s calendar - and arguably on the bay - will once again this Sunday 28th April see upwards of 50 boats racing in the annual event. Boats of all shapes and sizes ranging from 12-foot small sailing boats, high performance off-the-beach catamarans and up to 52’ ocean going yachts, will test their talents against each other for the honours of the race. Each year is different, sometimes very light winds demand the absolute skills of its crews, whilst other years the wind prevails seeing the crew challenged and, in some cases, simply “holding on”.

This premium event will grace the horizons of the bay with a flotilla of boats and many support and spectator boats. Good vantage points from Raby Bay and Cleveland point will see all the off-the-beach boats heading off in procession for the start mid-morning from Cleveland Point. Good vantage points along the point late morning will see the start, and later in the day as the boats return home again, with some claiming glory and others happy to see it all over.

This race event started in 1969. Originally dubbed the Cleveland Catamaran Marathon, the name was later changed to the Action Shopfitters Peel Island Marathon thanks to the generous sponsorship of Action Shopfitters. Those who have spent the time circumnavigating the Island in both light and heavy wind conditions can truly attest to the Marathon naming.

This year will be no different, boats are travelling from far and wide throughout Queensland and NSW to compete, all converging on Cleveland Point for the great race.

Come along and watch, relax and enjoy the beautiful bay, and see the action unfold.

The Cleveland Yacht Club also welcomes spectators, competitors and volunteers alike.

History

In 1969 the inaugural Cleveland Catamaran Marathon was run. This has developed over the years into the current Peel Island Marathon which is sailed toward the end of the sailing season each year.
