THE BLOOMER CONSTRUCTIONS 3 RACE RALLY
The Bloomer Constructions 3 Race Rally was held at Cleveland Yacht Club last weekend 14 and 15 November in idyllic sailing conditions.
The first race of the rally was started off Cleveland Yacht Club by the race sponsor, Wayne Bloomer in his Shoning Cat, Sentier. Wayne managed to up anchor after everyone else had started and still win the race on corrected time. The battle for line honours was between Apriori a Farr 11.6 with a very colourful crew of ten and Medina, A Beneteau 42.7. Apriori made the most of the shifty wind conditions and crossed the line first.Second on handicap was a newcomer to the Cleveland Fleet, Mark Davis in Das Boot, a Hanse Yacht.
The race finished at the Sand Hills on Moreton Island and after a belated lunch it was all ashore for the next race.
Race 2 was a running race from the base of the sand hill to the second ridge and back. Although some yachts had many runners the best time for each was counted for the overall results. Medina’s runner, Daniel Waller crossed the line first hotly pursued by Apriori’s skipper, Trevor Hill and then Sentior’s Blake Rogers
On Sunday morning we lined up for Race3 in a light north westerly wind with Spinnakers flying, a welcome change from Saturday’s all windward race.
Apriori took an early lead, with Medina hot on her heels. Places changed a couple of times but as the wind strengthened and swung towards the East, Apriori took off and once again won line honours and first on handicap. Second was Matika, a Lingard crewed by the Uscinski family and third Medina, skippered by Dave Waller
Ten minutes before the finish the wind increased gusting to over 18 knots, creating some exciting finishes with spinnaker drops amongst the CYC dinghy fleet. The whole fleet finished within half an hour of the first yacht.
Trophy Presentation was at the Icon Bar, the meeting place and sponsor for the CYC yacht fleet’s JAM series.
The Bloomer Construction 3 Race Rally Trophy for overall results was won by Apriori, second Sentier and third Medina. Apriori’s crew excelled themselves with their red, white and grey shirts and red shorts. The girls in the crew even had designer red dresses for the cocktail hour and dinner. Congratulations Apriori. and Bloomer Constructions.

The Cleveland Yacht Club welcomes yachts to their race program with the monthly JAM race held on the 1st Sunday of each month. The race is a jib and main sail event commencing off the Cleveland Point with a course determined by the weather.
The JAM races emanated from the inaugural Queensland Beneteau Cup held off Cleveland and supported by the Cleveland Yacht Club. The success of this event resulted in Dave Waller from the Beneteaus and Ian Thomson of Qld Catalinas obtaining support from local restaurant the Icon Bar where members sign on Sunday at 9am with racing starting on VYC Yardstick and personal handicaps determining individual start times.
The course is usually around Peel Island and has been a great success with fleets of yachts and cats competing for monthly prizes of Champagne, wine and a can and two straws for third place. The fleet has included Beneteau, Catalina, Dragon, Sonata, Hood, Cats and Tris; to name but a few, indeed all are welcome. The day ends with a presentation and good company at the Icon Bar from 4pm.
