Cleveland Yacht Club

History

There has been sailing on Moreton Bay almost since the establishment of the colony in 1824 and there were regular sailing regattas toward the end of the 19th Century and the early 1900's.

In 1904 the Cleveland Sailing Club was formed to plan and conduct regattas with management meetings held in the School of Arts building.

For much of the 1940's the club was "in recess" due to restrictions during and immediately after the war. The 1950's however saw a resergence in club activities and moves to secure a clubhouse and grounds. The name of the club was changed to the Cleveland Yacht Club to allow power boats to be introduced to the club. CYC also attained the title to the current block of land and a clubhouse in this decade.

Since that time many different classes have been active at the clubs. Early on it was Sprogs, Finns. and Sabots.

In 1969 the inaugural Cleveland Catamaran Marathon was run. This has developed over the years into the current Peel Island Marathon.
